Tickets

Junior Prom Tickets!

The theme for this year's prom is Fall. I went along with the theme, using the common colors of Autumn (deep brown, yellow, red, and green) and scattered leaves (live trace) around the border. Faded lines in the background and the simple fonts give the ticket a bit of elegance. The underline beneath "Junior" pulls the viewer's eye from left to right, over to the important information. Words are aligned uniformly along the right edge of the ticket to give it a neat and organized appearance.

In Progress

I'm not certain on a color scheme, but I know there is going to be a variety of pinks for the Breast Cancer aspect. I'm going to stick with neutrals too, like blacks and grays, with some brown. So far I am not completely happy with the background because the radial gradient is too centered. I am going to play with moving the circle around to make it more captivating.

The mood is hopeful but serious.

Poster Quote & Map

"Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words
And never stops at all."
- Emily Dickinson

Implied

1. The word is translucent so the background can pass through, making it less obvious,
2. An ellipsis ... is used to substitute words or objects to indicate a continuation. The ellipsis in the piece indicates the pattern in the background continues eventually,
3. The ellipsis provokes thought. What is implied? It gives the piece mystery because it almost appears unfinished,
4. The sudden change in gradient and rough transitions between light and dark have a similar effect as the ellipsis, and
5. The word itself does not consume the entire page because it is meant to be relatively subtle.

Black on White

1. The background shows the extreme contrast between black and white,
2. The word "black" is in fact black, and it is literally on a white background,
3. The word "white" is white, and is on black,
4. The fonts are different to again show how black and white are opposite. The "black" is thick and bold, while "white" is smooth and graceful, and
5. The words are shadowing each other because they are always opposite.

Camouflage

1. The background is the word "camouflage" in different colors and layers to create an earthy blend,
2. All of the colors are earth tones so they all blend in to each other,
3. The fuzzy shadow behind the main word "camouflage" causes it to merge with the background in a more natural way,
4. The font is intentionally fuzzy and rough for an organic appearance, and
5. The piece has a natural look and the word does not blend in perfectly. Camouflage is not usually impossible to see, but tricks the eye and is a connection to nature and the surrounding area.

Active

1. The complementary colors are bright and exciting,
2. The word "active" in the background is blurred and curved so it looks like its moving,
3. The letters are of different sizes and orientation to provide a sense of depth, like the letters are falling from various places at various speeds,
4. The falling letters keep your eye actively moving around the page because they lead your eye through it, and
5. The whole piece feels like it is a snapshot of a very active scene where the letters are all over the place, falling from above and going off the page on every side.

STABLE

1. Like framework on a house, the letter T's act as columns holding the word "stable" up,
2. At the same time, the columns are holding the word down,
3. The word is locked so tightly in between the columns and the edge of the page that it can't possibly move anywhere,
4. The black edge around the page holds the whole piece together, and
5. The font itself is formal, bold, and uppercase.

quiet.

This piece has a relaxing mood about it. It works because:

1. The neutral colors keep it mellow,
2. The opacity of the letters prevent any of them from lurching forward,
3. The floral design of the underline gives it a sense of authority, yet maintains its grace. It makes me think of someone insisting one be quiet, but only because the baby is sleeping :)
4. The period at the end of the darkest yet smallest word "quiet" has the same effect as the line, and
5. The descending words (or ascending, depending how you look at it) give it a sense of noise fading away.

Loud!

This is the first of my typography designs. Here's why it works:

1. The pale shade of red in the way back pulls the vibrant red letters forward,
2. The glowing neon outline makes the word jump from the background,
3. The dark background has a stark contrast from the word itself,
4. The background's explosive edges give the illusion that the word is literally popping off the page, and
 5. The word "loud" being front and center draws your attention directly to it as the most important part of the piece.

Repetition and Variation in Design

A grid of tires: repetition of subject, variation in style, and bright red effects for interesting contrast and eye-catching focal points.

A much more colorful piece: a whimsical pile of tires.

Peace is Always Beautiful

This is my first color design and the last piece in the book. The vegetation and the horse, along with the monochromatic color scheme, work together to create a tranquil scene.

Put It All Together

This design is a combination of the skills learned from previous works. I love the old truck (1931 Ford Model AA) as it takes the viewer back in time when life was simple and perhaps more peaceful. The hayfield, the flowers, the sweeping letters and the neutral background keep the piece calm and quiet.

Pattern Design

The third page was created with pattern fills. The background is of falling leaves and the foreground is of birch trees. The peace signs give the theme away, but the other components reinforce the sense of tranquility. Few things are more relaxing than a walk through the deep woods and being one with nature.

Gradient Design

The second design in my book was created with gradients and fills. The scene is intended to be a peaceful place where one could connect with nature. The tree, flowers, sunrise, and dark gradient in the background give the artwork a calm mood.

Line Design

The first project was a book of several artworks which share a common theme. The theme of my book is tranquility. This design is the first in the book and was created using only lines. The neutral gray tones, the sweeping circles in the background, as well as the leaf and water ripples give the piece a sense of tranquility.
